I remember how much information I craved in the early stage of my coaching business, until it led to so much confusion, distraction, overwhelm and ultimately—inaction. I was consuming everything and not creating, not building. So I then started seeking out different kinds of mentors—those who could support my desire for real transformation over just more information. And everything changed.
Here are 5 ways you can support your clients with more transformation (when everyone else is inadvertently focused on the opposite).
Instead of inviting people to “free discovery calls”, invite them to 20-minute chats and put all of your attention on them.
Ask thought-provoking questions like:
If your life were absolutely amazing three years from now…what will be happening?
What do you think might be the biggest challenges ahead to making that life real?
What are the biggest opportunities ahead of you?
What have you already done to make that 3 year vision possible?
And the last question, IF they’re someone you’d like to help and think you could help: Would you like some help with that?
Now you’re creating the possibility - and value - of creating a coaching experience for someone as opposed to trying to “get them as a client” or sell your program (what most people are doing). One way to astonish your clients and stand out from the crowd.
Instead of cold messaging someone and telling them how you can help them or dropping a link to your free e-book, reach out and say... “Hey Name, I see that you recently accomplished x / spent 15 years with (company) where you led an HR department during challenging times… my mission is this… I’d love the opportunity to connect, exchange stories and see if I can add value to you in any way. Would you be opposed to a quick 20 minute call? And if not, that’s absolutely perfect too.”
Many will say NO, but you only need a small segment of the right people to say YES—which is far more likely when you’re coming from a place of service over selling.
Instead of inviting someone to your Facebook Group, invite them to a private zoom session with all of your clients. Give them an actual taste and experience of what it’s like being a part of your community. Some people will ask you how to become a client and others will be forever grateful for the experience, sharing your name with others.
Instead of giving clients the how, spend more time on the why. Then they’ll be able to accomplish the how without depending on you. For example, it’s easy to teach the “5 steps to weight loss” but without the why to anchor it, you’re just giving them information. Help your clients be able to answer why they want to lose weight first—why NOW? Why YOU? Because if a strong enough why isn’t present, the how is not going to work.
Challenge: Start sharing your WHY.
Example: “I was 25 pounds overweight for the majority of my life…and then it dawned on me one day while on the playground with my daughter…she said “Mommy, take me down the slide!”...and I wasn’t able to. Then I realized all the things I’d potentially not be able to do with her—or miss out on completely—because of the extra weight I was carrying around. It was that moment when I decided to make a change. I slowly figured out the 5 or so things I needed to do to get on the right track. I eventually lost and kept off the weight but more importantly, gained a deeper connection with both my daughter and husband that I didn’t know was possible. These 5 things transformed my life which is why it’s now my life’s mission to share them with clients and people like you.”
Instead of asking yourself “How can I make more money this month, quarter or year?” ask: “How can I do more, give more, for my clients than anyone else this month, quarter or year?” You can get to wherever you want to be financially when you understand it all comes down to how much value you’re creating for others.
Making these changes is what allowed me to take my coaching business to the next level in 2020 and grow significantly ever since—serving 15-20 amazing clients every year, earning a six-figure income and working 20-25 hours per week or sometimes even less. Something I couldn’t even have imagined just 5 years ago when I was breaking my back working for someone else with such little fulfillment; praying for a change.
But the best part of it all?
Having clients tell me time and time again how being on the receiving end of these “things” served and ultimately transformed their lives and businesses, and that of their own clients too.
It’s an incredible ripple effect that is music to my ears.
Because at the end of the day, most people are seeking a transformation, not just more information.
